Speaker Bio
Dan Halpren-Ruder is on a mission to save healthcare.  He is an experienced physician, Board-Certified in Emergency Medicine and Healthcare Quality Management.  He is obsessed with a healthcare system that out costs every healthcare system globally.  Yet American healthcare does not lead the pack in quality and certainly not in value.  So how to save healthcare USA?: one step at a time.  Everyone involved must get involved. Dan’s 35 years providing unanticipated healthcare needs has taught him a simple guiding light: take a deep breath, get the facts, formulate a plan and intervene.  He focuses on quality, for the obligatory cost reduction must not disturb quality.  An area of presumed cost reduction is burgeoning virtual healthcare or telehealth. Applying bountiful technology to healthcare delivery can cut cost and substantially improve the patient experience.  Its value is what’s to be determined.  Dan has always been an innovator.  His Emergency Medicine sibship took the downstairs “ER” to a front-and-center medical specialty.  He earned Board Certification that did not exist when he started.  He took responsibility as the director and eventually the contractor for a community hospital Emergency Department (ED).  Seeing waste in the ED, he was an early participant in the Urgent Care revolution.  His urgent care solution was to provide the same sense of safety folks saw in the ED in a less costly environment.  And saw it they did.  There were three UC centers when Dan got the fateful call, leading to a sale.  He served on the Board and advanced to presidency of the Medicare-mandated Rhode Island Quality Improvement Organization, making changes to the organization that catapulted it to a regional powerhouse (HealthCentric Advisors).  On to a fellowship in Telemedicine at Jefferson U. in Philly and a new opportunity to innovate.  “Lead, follow or get out of the way!”
